Drop Dead 5K (2021)
Woke up at 7 AM, a fair number of hours before I usually do, ate some quick breakfast, got dressed, drove deep into the middle of the city, parked and walked out of the parking deck and through the gates of a historical cemetery... are you with me so far?
Then I saw hundreds of people wandering around, food trucks, beer vendors, a DJ bumping some pretty sick jams, and a signup booth. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a first for me, a 5K MARATHON IN A GRAVEYARD! Wow.
So here's the thing, I "thought" I was familiar with this particular cemetery as I have photographed it a bit before for a project with the Friends of Fourth Ward Association. Little did I realize, though, that I'd only ever seen a small area and had not traversed far enough up the first hill to bear witness to the... oh 70 or so odd more acres sprawling across the whole place. Double wow.
See I was under the impression they would be looping this small area I previously knew about. Oh ho ho noooo one single lap around the entire place going back and forth and every which way. So what that means is I had to do a LOT of running on this weeee early morning when I expected to do very little running. Not dressed for it, not in shape at all right now, was totally not ready for it.
But I did it, because how else am I going to capture these people who sprinted off ahead of me at speeds currently unknown to mankind. There was no way I was catching up so I did a lot of sprinting across the gravesites to head off groups at scenic spots. I hope I'm not cursed or haunted now.
So if you were there and I captured you please enjoy your pictures, feel free to use them online on social media. I'd appreciate if you keep the watermark if possible and be sure to tag the #dropdead5k
