Common Wisdom
The Common Market in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte, NC has an alley way back patio area lined with two brick walls, and almost every brick has been tagged or drawn on. By themselves they're simply doodles on bricks, random expressions of individuals. Collectively, however, they represent a deeper look at the perspectives and expressions of our culture. This is essentially an anonymous forum, not unlike an Internet comments section, where anyone is free to say anything without taking responsibility for their words. What's most intriguing to me is the vast polarities of these messages. Some are childish and crude, though often humorous. Some skew toward hatred, racism, bigotry, and other fear-driven propaganda. Some of them are positive messages of love, peace, unity, and an understanding of ourselves. Some are simply nonsensical or maybe carry secret meanings. Regardless it's interesting to read through them and often times you will see something you missed the second time around!
